ETHNOGRAPHY OF THE UNIVERSITY Request for Proposals Deadline for submission of proposals is Tuesday, March 28, 2006. The Ethnography of the University (EOTU) Cross-Campus Initiative invites proposals from faculty interested in teaching EOTU-affiliated courses that will enhance opportunities for undergraduate research on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Our purpose is to promote undergraduate research on the university through a broad range of disciplines. Students are encouraged to use a variety of ethnographic and ethno-historical tools. Students in courses connected to EOTU will be encouraged to archive their work in a digital repository so that future students can build on it. Requests for funds for existing and new courses will be considered. In either case, faculty should communicate how the proposed courses will contribute to the goals of the EOTU initiative. Please consult the following for background and information: Funding Support for EOTU course development will be awarded primarily in the form of summer salary or research account funding in the amount of $1,000. Requirements 1. Participation in a 2½-day summer workshop to be held during the week of May 14. This workshop will introduce faculty to:
2. Participation in two EOTU meetings to take place during the academic year in which the course is taught, and two conferences at which students will present research completed in EOTU-affiliated courses (see <www.eotu.uiuc.edu/EOTUMODEL/Student/stconf_2005.htm> for a sample conference). 3. The proposed courses must be taught during Fall 2006, Spring 2007, Fall 2007, or Spring 2008. Enrollment in the course must be capped at 25. (Note: EOTU-affiliated sections of large lecture courses may be offered, but must be faculty taught.) Criteria for Selection Successful proposals will describe courses that can contribute to the growth of the EOTU initiative. EOTU favors courses that, once taught, will likely be offered again on a regular basis. All proposed courses should base at least 25% of their graded credit on EOTU-related activities. The projected frequency of future offerings should be specified, as should the nature and volume of course work related to EOTU. Application Please submit the following: 1. A short narrative statement that includes a statement of interest in the EOTU project, a description of the course to be linked to EOTU (where applicable, feel free to include the existing course syllabus), and a discussion of how the course will be incorporated into EOTU. 2. A statement of commitment to a) attend summer orientation and EOTU faculty and student presentation meetings, and b) comply with the human subjects and intellectual property protocols approved for EOTU. 3. A short letter of support from the executive officer of the applicant’s primary department that (a) indicates the department’s agreement to have the EOTU course or section(s) taught and (b) specifies the semester (Fall 2006, Spring 2007, Fall 2007, or Spring 2008) in which the course will be offered. The size of the course (i.e., 25 students or fewer) must also be indicated in the letter. 4. A brief academic biography (one paragraph will do). Completed applications must be submitted, and letters of support should arrive, by Tuesday, March 28, 2006 at 5 p.m. Awards will be announced quickly. Send all materials by mail, or e-mail attachment, to Gardner Rogers, EOTU Program Coordinator. Mail: 208 English Building/608 S. Wright Street/Urbana, IL 61801 (MC-718).
